Audio Distortion while using Optical on IP35 Pro

Hi Folks,

Ive noticed that if i have the pc volume on/around 100% using the optical out from my IP35 Pro mother board, there seems to be some distortion  Thought the purpose of using digital was that it would imliminate this, hence im alittle suprised.

Its not a huge problem, simple fix is to keep the volume around 50% and allow the amp to do its job. Just abit awkward as i never know what the volume difference will be when i switch the amp to the tv/radio etc.

Anyone know a reason for this? Its not having a big impact, just curious really :D

Cheers.

Oh, and another issue, when starting a dvd in media center, i get a quite loud noise like a jack has just been plugged in, but only happens every so often, but its loud and sounds like it could damage my speakers. Again, seems strange as i thought optical removed these sorts of issues and ive never experienced it with other optical devices ive used. Or could it be to do with media center?

Well I would say it was the amp on for the digital out that's overloading - it would have to use an amplifier of some sort wouldn't it to increase the output - so it's getting to it's limits.

They are on different side of the room using different wall sockets and a 10m optical cable, although still happened with the 2m one i have.

As you say Vortex, think it must be the amplifier built into the motherboard which cant cope with the volume at 100%, if im honest, i didnt expect to be able to adjust the volume using optical, as a digital signal, i assumed it would just be a signal which gets decoded by the amp. Dont know how using 1's and 0's it can also adjust the volume so im impressed and happy as i can still use the pc controls to adjust volume :)

do you have any equalisers enabled in the sound drivers? or your music software? turn them off if you do.

easy answer to that - it adjusts the volume and everything before it encodes the audio for spdif output.

No equalisers enabled on the pc and turned them down on the amp.

Thanks for explaining the volume, makes sense i guess, would that mean the volume is transmitted as part of the signal? As apposed to varying the strength of the optical light? Which is what i didnt think could be changed.

The audio data is modified during mixing to reduce the gain values. As you say, the actual optical signal doesn't change at all.
