Im setting up a media centre pc for my dad. He doesn't want surround sound the living room is quite small.

Anyway, his tv has two hdmi inputs but no vga or seperate audio input. Is there a way to get analogue sound + dvi into a hdmi cable? even if it requires a reasonably cheap extra sound card?

The tv does have a component port with audio left/right if I could somehow convert the dvi to component if that is a better solution.

my gfx card can put out sound through the HDMI output and i just use the 1 cable to send both sound and picture but it depends on the out put jack your using.if its an ASUS motherboard then the audio manager it comes with can be used to eaisily choose how to relay the sound, dont know the manual way to do it but have done it before

not 100% sure what you mean here, whats the spec of the actual media pc, specifically mobo, but if you can list it all that'd help

From what I gather, the TV has two HDMI inputs and component input only. His media PC outputs in DVI and thus he cannot use a typical adapter as it would not carry sound to the TV. So he's asking if there’s some other type of a merging a DVI feed with an audio feed (presumably from the audio jacks) into a HDMI feed, which he can plug into the TV.

I have no idea on how to do this; only thing I can suggest is buying a cheapish 2.1 sound system and not using the TV speakers when watching something on the PC.

Edit: Apparently there are DVI to Component adapters out there, so maybe that along with an adapter for 3.5mm to Left/Right audio. Should work, not sure about the quality of component video though.

Most modern graphics cards let you feed in an audio input into them so you can use a HDMI cable.

I imagine what you need here is a DVI to HDMI cable which are easy to get hold of, but you need one that will send the audio signal along as well which isnt so easy. I've had a google about and found a device for 50 quid on ebay that will combine a DVI signal and audio to HDMI. Seems a lot of money considering that no conversion needs to be done to the DVI signal and the sound just needs to be added to the HDMI feed.

Or you could go with your original idea; some TVs support being switched onto a video input such as componant RCA and taking audio from an audio input port. Best bet on this one would be to download the TVs instruction manual and find out if that is supported.

Just get an adi hd4xxx card they have a built in sound card for hdmi, the speakers from the tv will then output the pc's sound if yoou select the audio over hdmi in the sound section of the control panel

ati 4xxx card should have a hdmi port or come with a dvi to hdmi adaptor

sound will be passed to the tv digitally over hdmi, if you have analogue speakers attached to the tellie then these will recieve the sound aswell
