Audio extraction from 4k Firestick

I have a fairly old JVC projector that only gets used for a few movie nights etc. It’s not set up permanently so has to be set up etc but works well. I used to connect a nvidea shield to it via a hdmi switcher that had audio breakout to a speaker via 3.5mm jack. Worked a treat.

Sadly the Shield packed in a while back and I replaced it with a 4k fire stick that was on offer at Amazon to see how it compared and it was spot on so didn’t buy another Shield.

Today, I tried to hook it up to the projector and I could get a picture no problem but no audio. I tried the same speaker that I always use and a different speaker via mini jack and then took the soundbar from the living room to connect via optical as the hdmi switch has an optical out too. I messed round for ages and some how managed to get sound but no picture with a certain combination of hdmi cables but then when I unplugged the same cables and plugged them back in I’d lose the sound but get picture.

I’ve had a look online and there are some references to the fire stick blocking audio when it thinks the signal is being tampered with but to be honest it was all above me!

Does anyone know what the problem is? The fire stick is 4k, the switch says it’s 4k but the projector is 1080p. I know there are different types of hdmi leads so not sure if I need a certain type or is it something else?

Any help greatly appreciated thanks.

I remembered I had a Chromecast in the draw so I plugged that into the hdmi switch and cast a film from Netflix on my phone to it and it all worked as expected so it’s definitely an issue with the fire stick.

Would still be good to get to the bottom of it as I have an android app that Id like to use that I can’t get on my iPhone…

Don't know about the cable issue but the fire stick can connect to a Bluetooth speaker if that helps

Thanks, I'll give that a try for this specific application as it doesn't matter if the audio is slightly out on it.
