Does anyone know where you can buy the lighting to USB and aux lead that's in the image below? I've conjured up an alternative Bluetooth solution, but I could really do with just buying this lead...thanks in advance.

To be honest that "Lightning Sounds Cable" looks like it has a 30pin convertor on it anyway. That only problem I've found with that amazon one is that the lead is a little long. It's ok if you can hide it away but I realise it can't be done on all cars. :)

If you can use Bluetooth, why would you want to use a complicated cable system? Not trying to be awkward, just wondering.

It's for my car...for the bluetooth to work, I have to buy a bluetooth module, wire that in to the stereo via aux, and then wire the module to the car via a micro USB lead to get power to it! The dual connector thing would have meant that I could sort of have one lead.

The more I think about it, though, the more suitable bluetooth is I think. My one concern is will it prevent the connection to the phone that the stereo has...not that I've experienced that working yet.

Have you considered fitting an aftermarket head unit? one that has Bluetooth already? That way you'll be able to pick up calls etc and it'll cut out the radio, if you fit a Bluetooth module that connects to the aux, if your phone rings and your listening to the radio / cd you'll have to manually switch to aux to hear the caller through the stereo, you'll also have to shout into the phone rather than having an external mic.

Hah you make a very good point. I don't want to change the look of the car's interior, so no I don't want to fit an aftermarket head unit. However, it may be that the newer version of my head unit does all this, so I could look into getting one of those.

I'm not 100% sure that it would take all the steps that you're talking about, though. The phone would be connected to the car by bluetooth and aux via bluetooth. If the phone rings, the head unit would switch to the phone setting on it, and then I think I could take the call, and at the end it would switch back. The head unit would have no idea that you're involving your phone twice.

I always used to have to shout at my phone anyway, though, so that's not a huge issue.

Why so?

If it's for resale, then just keep the original and reinstall it when it comes to selling the car.

If it's not for resale purposes then...what else?

Because it won't look like it's supposed to, and because I can't afford a new stereo.

When has it not looking like it's supposed to stopped you on previous motors?

It isn't meant to have a bigass cable coming out from it either, and wasn't designed to have an iPhone mounted on the dash. But that's not stopping you from adding those?

Yeah but in the beemer it would look horrendously out of place.

Those are rather less substantial than changing the stereo. At the end of the day, I'm paying like £25 instead of £200.

I'm confused... Does the current head unit already have Bluetooth? Am I right in thinking that it supports Bluetooth calling but not music, etc over bluetooth? if that is the case there COULD be a software update available that would enable audio over Bluetooth. There was for my girlfriends old fiesta! Apples and oranges but its worth a Google.

I fear buying a newer version of your current head unit would be much more expensive than a standard aftermarket jobbie.

What you are saying about the phone being connected twice, would that work? I know the head unit and Bluetooth module would be ok, but would your phone allow two connections at the same time? Or would one drop when you tried connecting to the other from the phone?

It does have bluetooth but as you say, you can only make calls through it. That's a great idea though, I'll investigate whether there is a software update.

All options bar the one I've chosen seem to be expensive.

Little bit of research shows that you can connect multiple bluetooth devices. Frankly, the ability to receive phone calls doesn't matter to me.

Fair enough.

Another device to consider would be a parrot, it could handle your calls (although not important) and audio though that may be what you have already been looking at :) They don't cost the earth either.

£17 for a Geartist bluetooth to FM transmitter on a certain rainforest site. Very cheap and works well.
