Hey,

Was wondering if it's possible to connect a sub which has phono outputs to active monitors with xlr inputs?

I have two Yamaha HS80's and a sub which only has red, white and yellow phono outputs. I'm saving up for a proper sub (Yamaha HS10W) but it's going to be next month before i can afford it.

My thinking was red phono out and white phono out to the xlr inputs on the yammy, then 6mm jacks to the dac i have.

Pins 1 & 3 in the XLR plug should be connected to the shield for unbalanced connections. That cable you have linked to should be ok, but without seeing how its wired up inside the XLR plug i couldn't be absolutely certain.

Ah ok, so it's not just as simple as buying that cable then? If i did buy that cable, is there a chance it won't work?

Also, would i need two of these cables? Red out and white out to the perspective xlr inputs on the monitors?

Cheers mate..

Just had a look at those yamaha monitors, you don't need to link the sub to the satellites as they have their own built in amplifiers. You need to use the 1/4" jack input for unbalanced inputs. What connection does your sound card output?

For 3.5mm stereo out, you need a cable that goes from 1x 3.5mm stereo jack - 2x 6.3mm mono jacks.

For 2x RCA you would need a pair of RCA - 6.3mm mono jacks.

EDIT: just thought about the question in a different way. Nope i don't think you can directly link the sub with the monitors as they don't have any outputs to allow it. If your sound card allows you to connect a sub up separately you could try that. The proper yamaha sub that you are saving for takes the balanced (XLR) or unbalanced (1/4" jack) signal which it uses for sub signals and passes a balanced (XLR only) signal on to the two monitors.

Yes, If you are using TRS for the yamaha monitors you have 4 spare RCA's that you can use with the sub. You may have some fine tuning to do to get the levels to match between the sub and the monitors. When you get the yamaha sub, you will need some XLR cables, if it doesn't come with any, as the TRS cables from that soundcard will go into the sub and an XLR m-f cable will go to each of the speakers from the sub.

Holy batman thread revival!

My Dac has given way unfortunately, need to send it back to Focusrite. I'm looking for solutions for the meantime tho as to how i can get my sound working on the sub and monitors i have.

this is the back of the sub..

Could i just feed 3.5mm jacks from the mac (using a splitter) to the 6.3mm jacks on the back of the sub...that should work shouldnt it?

Any help appreciated lads..cheers.

If the output from the mac is stereo TRS (tip, ring, sleeve) you will need to get an adaptor that splits it into mono left and right 2 pole jack. Splitting it into 2 stereo signals might work but it isn't a good idea.

Something like this cable, but it would be easier if it had 1/4" male termination rather than female. You might be able to use TRS to XLR to link it to the sub, if it is happy with unbalanced via XLR. A jack to phono pair would do the same job with 2 phono to 1/4" jack adaptors.

Cheers :) i don't know anything about that sort of stuff. Need to read some material on SOS to be honest, it's poor i don't know it.
