Audio options, hard of hearing.

Hi, my dad struggles to hear the audio on his Sony T.V. especially from Sky HD, which oddly always seems slightly quieter than freest or the SD channels.

Now sadly there isn't much room around the T.V. so massive floor standing speakers are a no go and there isn't much space on the stand either side :(

I was thinking that a sound bar would tick all the boxes in terms of size, being a bit discreet but what are they like for actual sound quality?

Also how would it work in terms of inputs? So Sky HD would be optical out>in as would blu-ray. Would freest be the same? optical out from the TV into the speakers/sub etc.

If a budget was set at say £200 - £250 :

1) What would be the ideal solution ignoring any of the previous criteria? Would the HTX22HDX be the best option? Bearing in mind vocals/and clarity of the audio is the main concern. Or something like the Sony HTFS3.CEK 2.1 (the Bravia Sync might be worth it?)

2) Would a sound bar, such as the Panasonic SC-HTB520EB-K 240W Sound Bar? Granted that one only has 1 optical (Sky HD?) and 1 HDMI (blu-ray?)

I apologise, my audio knowledge is barely above that of my Dads.

Thank you.

Is it just your dad? An option for this could be to get him a pair of wireless headphones so that the extra volume doesnt disrupt/annoy anyone else.

I imagine if you've got the tv turned up very loud a sound bar probably wouldnt go *that* much louder although the clarity might be a little better.

What about a hearing aid that he only wears whilst watching tv?

Yeah we use subtitles on pretty much everything we can :) Like I mentioned it's so ingrained on me that even on my own in my own place I have to have subtitles :D

I think I might look more at the Sony offering, if I can make it so that there's not yet another remote that would be a bonus as well.
