Audio out of sync - WMP

When watching movie files in windows media player, after what seems like a random period of time (few secs to 10 mins) the audio plays about half a second behind the picture.
I can fix it instantly by moving the scroll bar that moves to another point in the video, so it doesn't seem to be a problem with the files themselves but it's annoying to have to go to the computer to click it.
If no-one knows how to fix this, can anyone recommend a good vid playing alternative?

Running xp with all updates, WMP 10, catalyst 6.3

I would say you have 2 camp's. The free player would be VLC player and the best IMO would have to be PowerDVD.

I've d/l the trial of powerdvd, but now playing the same videos I get sound but some kind of visualisation instead of the picture - kind of like I haven't got the right codecs installed? Strange as WMP seems to play it...
