Audio quality over Airplay?

Hey Guys

Wondering if anyone knows the answer to this:

If using iTunes to send lossless music (alac) to an airplay enabled device (such as an ATV or Raspberry Pi running XBMC) that is in turn connected to an amplifier via HDMI, does the quality of the music get reduced or transcoded, or is it as good as connecting to the amplifier directly?

Thanks in advance

From wiki: The streams are transcoded using the Apple Lossless codec with 44100 Hz and 2 channels encrypted with AES.

So yeah. In transport it's good quality still, it's down to the DAC keeping the quality.

And just to back this up, for the short while my Mac mini isn't acting as a server (due to bloody enclosures not working properly!) AirPlay is being used. Sounds great (well, what goes in comes out), and is so reliable and easy to use.
