Audio question regarding a PS3 and a PC monitor via HDMI

I have a bit of a query regarding this. I have a Samsung T240 for my PC and a PS3 plugged into my mid-range HDTV (no 1080p support). Have just got into the world of Blu-Rays and now really want to rig my PS3 up onto the T240. My problem is mainly that the T240 has no in-built audio capability and therefore I need to also use my PC speakers for the PS3 if I am going to do this.

I just want confirmation from people that my idea will work. I intend to plug the PS3 into the T240 via the HDMI input (I can keep my PC plugged in via DVI) and then use an optical out cable (Which I don't think comes with the PS3?) for the audio and plug that into my Motherboard's SPDIF input connection. That way, the audio from the PS3 will play on my PC's 5.1 speakers?

I have checked that my Motherboard has spdif input and output so in theory I am hoping this will work. The speakers will start processing the PS3 audio when the PS3 is plugged in? This will give me 5.1 sound? Thx guys.

The PS3 will happily output stereo music, DD and DTS via optical. What you won't get is HD audio, but if you're using computer speakers, I'd be surprised if you'd notice the difference.

That's fine really. I just want sound lol. So it should work then? I've never tried plugging anything into a pc through spdif so am not really sure what to expect.

Yes it will work. That's how I've been using my PS3 for the last 18 months (though not with computer speakers).
