Firstly sorry to the moderators if this is in the wrong place, just unsure where it would best fit into the forum as its bit of a mix of topics.

Pretty simple, I have this mobo: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-389-GI

And using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and have my machine plugged into my speaker system via the optical port.

I would like to know how I can get it to run in 5.1 rather than 2.1 which it currently is in, I cant figure out for the life of me how to do it.

Thanks for any help and Merry Christmas to you all :)

Windows search for "Manage audio devices" right click on "Speakers" or whatever device is outputting, and select "Configure Speakers". There should be an option to select 5.1.

Yep done all that but now it will play in 5.1 for the sound test, but it doesnt give me an option to set it through the 'SPDIF interface' which is the sound output, will only play back in stereo, although when you do the DolbyDigital test it plays in 5.1 but only gives 2-channel options for my sound :(

The reason why you can get 5.1 when using the Dolby Digital test, is because the test is using Dolby Digital. I know that is obvious, but any multi channel audio needs to be encoded with Dolby Digital or DTS in order to be sent via SPDIF. If you play a DVD, then you will get 5.1 as the DVD has a Dolby Digital and/or DTS track. When playing PC games or music, for eg, you just stereo as they do not use DD/DTS.

ah thanks for explaining it to me :) I got a gaming headset for xmas anyway which I use 95% of the time now, which gives 7.1 (apparently) and it is just as good as my 5.1 system for detecting where sounds are coming from :)
