I have a bunch of cassette tapes, minidiscs and 12" records I want to record in to my PC for playback on my ipod.
I have a Sony full-size MD deck, cassette deck and a Technics 1210 running through a Behringer PP400 pre-amp in to a M-Audio Delta 2496 PCI card. I've been using Audacity to capture the incoming audio.
After discovering that the M-Audio card has no headroom or any gain control whilst attempting to record vinyl, I decided to try recording some MDs. I was unable to solve an SPDIF issue which meant there was no signal being received optically, so I decided to try recording via analogue.
I noticed the levels were extremely high, so turned them down on the MD deck (it's capable of reducung the analogue output by up to 20dBs). I turned the output down by 6.0dB, which kept peak levels well within the green.
Whilst the playback was as good as could be expected, when I recorded in Audacity and then played back the recording, there was a very noticable constant crackle. The input was not clipping, and was only about half way up the level meter on the M-Audio control panel. The waveform in Audacity was about half the size of maximum. There was no crackle during silent parts of the recording.
Can anyone assist with locating a solution to the crackle introduced by the recording?
