Hi all,

I want to record my DJ sets and at the moment have my DJ Mixer record output connected to my DSLR's inbuilt microphone. I think it's recording in mono though as it doesn't sound as good as the track when I play it on my computer.

The cable I have is a 2 RCA which merges into one cable going into one of the microphone jacks on my DSLR. There are two microphone jacks but the manual says that the inbuilt microphone records in stereo.

Do I need a different cable which goes into both microphone sockets on my DSLR or do I need a better quality microphone attached to the DSLR which bypasses the inbuilt one?

You'd have far better quality if you record your DJ set directly to an audio recording device or a laptop. I have read that the preamps on Canon cameras are not the best quality. Once you have the recording you can sync up the audio in post editing which is straightforward to do.

Ok thanks. Sounds like a better idea. So how do I do it and what do I need?

I have an external Focusrite 2i2 sound card. Presumably I need RCA from record output on Mixer to XLR input on sound card input?

Yes, that would do and would allow you to record to your laptop/computer. I'd fully test the setup to ensure you are not left with a lack of inputs when on a "gig" or it doesn't work at all :)
