My Dad's just been round and ask If audio tape can be converted to CD easily.

I asked him why he'd want to, and he said all his music he likes is on audio tape i.e. live Jazz etc, etc, and he has a CD player in his car.

I did mention that even if he got it onto cd, the actual car cd player may be a bit fussy as to the format.

I tried a search, but unfortunately cd is too short a search string, so not too helpful.

Thanks in advance

You might need a specialist bit of kit to run the signal from a tape onto a PC. Though it might be possible depending on what line outs you have on your tape deck.

What sound card do you have? The hard bit would be (as said) getting it off your tapes, but once the songs are on a PC, then writing them to a CD is simple stuff.

All you need is a cable connected from the line-out on your hi-fi/tape deck/amp to the line-in socket on your motherboard. Or you can use the headphone socket on your hi-fi/tape deck/amp if it doesn't have line-out.

Then use Audacity to capture the music, which can then convert it to a .wav file. You can then use Nero or whatever to burn the .wav as a standard audio CD.

Or if he has a lot of cassette tapes, he could use This

Simply plug it into the USB port of your computer, put your cassette in and press play, and use one of the different free utilities (see Audio Tools (CD Ripping/Recording/Editing etc) section) to "capture" the sound on your computer into which ever audio file format you like.

I have used the above product and it works very well. :)

I always just use the audio line from headphone socket -> mic or line-in socket and it works perfectly. All you need is some sort of tape player, even a walkman would work.
