I currently have a set of Creative GigaWorks 7.1 S750 setup in 5.1 with an Asus Xonar D2.
I use these for games but primarily in 2.1 mode but mostly music and hence would like a much better quality 2 or 2.1 solution.
I was debating a NAD 715+Q 1020i's for about £400 but have been drawn to the Audioengine 5's as they seem a great speaker.
Also if I need Ae also do a powered sub if I find the need for the .1 over and above what the speakers already offer, but reading around they seem pretty good as is.
Wondering if anyone has had any experience of these?

edit...sorry meant to put a link in http://audioengineusa.com/store/pro...id=77&osCsid=f075d5fad0afec615661a5478e768ca0

I've been drawn towards the 5's too, I would like to know too if anyone has these. They're on top of my list ahead of the Audioengine 2's and Aego M.

why not just get an amp and proper speakers just save up for it £90 for mordaunt shorts or b&w and a semi decent amp £100.
spending over £150 you really should just get an amp and bookshelfs.

I ordered them late yesterday and they turned about an hour ago.
Build quality is outstanding, all the cables and speakers come in really nice felt bags, great for carrying everything around in without getting it scratched.

All cabled up without any issues, fired up winamp with some flac files and the sound quality is superb, much fuller and controlled than the creative speakers, although not quite as loud but still more than capable of annoying half the street :)

I've run through a good sample of music from mozart to kid rock and all of it has been handled very well indeed with the volume scaling well without getting tiny or bass heavy.

It's also nice to be able to still use the controls on the keyboard for volume, I just popped the speakers at 2/3 and do the rest on the dell keyboard.

Only niggles would be that they have no grills to cover the speakers, not really an issue but I live in a very old dusty house and would prefer the dust on a grill rather than the cones.
Also no headphone socket, not an issue for me as I never use them but it may be for some.

Anyway big thumbs up from me, big price jump from the Aego's or Ae2's but well worth it if you stretch to it.

Now to sell the S750's and make some room :)

Are they really much much better than the Aego's?

I have the Aego2's and find them very good. They sounded fantastic on my old soundstorm system. Not so great on my new realtek system, so I bought and tried it with the Xonar DX. I didn't like how my mp3's sounded on the xonar, so looking into Xfi.

anyway, I'm interested how these speakers compare to the Aego.

Will be interesting to see what you think, still being impressed with mine and not looking back from swapping out the S750's.
I'm finding I am listening to much more music than I used to, also not missing the 5.1 in games at all.
I swapped my Xfi for a Xonar a good few months ago and thought the difference was outstanding.

The biggest problem with any .1 system is balancing the sub especially going from games to music, where as a good 2 system sounds fab all the time once setup properly.

If you play games you will miss the sub, but the A5's are great for music and watching movies , noticed the quality of the sound increase in games but sounds like gun fire and explosions just arent the same, you need a sub if you game.

This is where confusion sets in, gunfire should not be low enough frequency to use a sub, an explosion yes but not gunfire.
If your sub is set with a high enough frequency cutoff for gunfire it's not a sub it's just compensating for having tiny bass drivers in the speakers.
With the A5's yes you loose a tiny amount of sub bass in explosions but overall I've found them so much better for gaming with than the S750's
You can also buy an add on sub for the Audioengines, so if you do have a real need at a later date it can be added.

Recieved mine yesterday, been playing around with it with my Ipod+rockbox+flac, impressed with the sound so far, but I do miss having a subwoofer.

Do you think I could connect the z2300 woofer to it?
