Hi Guys

I have a nice overclock on my q6600 using maximus extreme mobo.
I am happy with it since it was very easy to do in the bios using the CPU level up feature.

It's running on the crazy setting with a tuniq tower idling 34/35 and 45/50 under load. Passes prime etc.

However I was wondering if I could push this beast a bit more. I spent a fair bit of money going for a super fast system and recently wondered if I was getting the most of it. Reading up on ddr3 I gather I may have over shot the mark getting some of that ram but was wondering if there was a way to overclock that too; when I use the auto feature in bios seems to take away some ram speed. can you set it higher?

Perhaps some one has some settings listed with a similar system I could try with.
Thanks guys!!

Best to do your over clocking thro the bios, that board overvolts the cpu pll on auto.

And buying that board, and not using the on board tweaker.

welcome!
nice to see a fellow 9800gtx owner [we are a rare breed! :)]

imo manual in the bios every time

if you use the auto on that board you should have your head examined!
it should net you some astounding results if you persevere in learning the basics - once you understand what everything does its quite simple - i struggled with voltages - but learned through asking questions with a full detaied picture of my bios
everyone can work off that and offer advice

what is the chip currently running at

download coretemp and let us know the VID
also is it a G0 stepping or a B3? CPU-Z should tell you this
then we can help more

this is the thread that i did - it contains all the info you need - just alter settings for the ram

Hi mate thanks for the heads up.
Hope I am not killing my PC with auto turned up to CRAZY - although I have tested it with all the tools here and it passes EVERYTHING @3.5???

I have EXACTLY the same chip as you as I compared cpuid results.
I take it the 9800 gtx is another goof ball purchase - what up with that?

Hi again had a little play with some of the settings in your thread and immediatley hit blue screens, black screens lock ups. Boards must differ I guess.
There seem to be a lot of people using CPULEVEL up with no problems in various forums but the "guru's" if you like, say stay away.
Now what confuses me is that ASUS are a good make of mobo, and they actually make them, not fiddle around or cook them, but make them. Doesnt that stand them in a better position to know whats an optimum setting for their product. Not trying to start anything just wouldnt mind knowing.

I have decided, If possible to go for 4ghz on AIR. If I post you screenies would try help me, no worrys if not.

hi, asus may make the board but they don't know what cpu and ram you are going to put in it.

as has been said asus boards overvolt on auto, best to clock in the bios plus you will learn a lot more.

you will need a very good cooler for 4ghz, not easy on air but not impossible.

Ok now I understand thanks for that. Well I had a little more of a play and got a glimpse of some real speed. I did a basic overclock.
Set the multiplier to 9 then ramped up the FSB to about 415 and was hovering about 3.8 ghz. When I pushed it further blue screens galore. Now I know from reading I need to start pumping the voltages but wouldnt mind a hand on that. If I posted some screenies could you point in the right direction?

hi, before you start upping volts what temps are you hitting under load?

It is slightly harder to over clock with 4gb of ram, you may need to up the n/bridge slightly.

also check that you are not over clocking the ram, get the cpu stable then sort out the ram.

the 9800 is a good card - i only paid £20 to upgrade to it from a 8800GT so it wasnt a big deal

i was saying we are a rare breed because not a lot of people have them

facto f the matter is - the card works well and plays all games at a decent res
so its not a bad purchase - dont stress!

and yeah - you cant just copy settings - i gave mine as an example - and my thread has a lot of posts from guys like Pneumonic and Cob who really know what they are doing - they explain what to put for each value - and more importantly WHY you need to put it like that
just thought it would give you an indication of what bits you need to tweak
