Hi All,

Ive been looking for an auto driver installer that is completely legit and also free.

Ive been getting some BSOD recently and after inspecting the Event Logs it "could" be driver related.

Ive downloaded Auslogics and it is telling me that a lot of things are out of date even though ive recently been to the Asus website and downloaded and installed all the latest drivers that i could.

For example, one of the drivers im being told that is outdated is the 300 chipset one. The one i have is apparently dated 1968!

Any ideas on a program that is legit and will install drivers without messing me about?

Please for the love of god don't use a 'driver' updater program.

If you think you need to reinstall drivers get them from the manufactures website for motherboard / chipset from AMD or Intel and GPU drivers from Nvidia or AMD site.

OK fair enough. I just wondered if there was something honest and easy out there that would work ok instead of trawling around looking for drivers.

Snappy driver installer origin.

I've not had any issues with it with the exception of graphics drivers which you should get direct from AMD/nVidia.

Apparently i have 24GB of missing or out of date drivers! That just cant be right! :D

It’s not and that’s why you shouldn’t use auto installers.

Go to your GPU/Motherboard site if you really have too and install them from there. Usually you can get away with letting windows handle them. If there’s some missing then get them.

DO NOT USE A DRIVER APP

Odds are that one or more of the driver packs is rather large as a specific pack might contain drivers for a specific component that has its main part of that device can come from one of many manufacturers, plus the packs contain drivers from xp to windows 10 which compounds the issue.

The program will only extract and install the required driver for the hardware, so if space is an issue you can go into the driver folder where the driver packs are kept and just nuke them when done.

Edit: You only need to update the indexes not download all the driver packs (24GB would equate to all the driver packs plus the indexes) as the indexes is all that is required for the program to identify the available hardware and currently installed driver and see if that driver is out of date or if there is a more optimised driver and when you have selected what drivers to update (remember to select the create a restore point in case something does go wrong) it will then proceed to download only the required driver packs which should only equate to 1-2GB.

Unless it's a laptop, just let Windows Update keep on top of your drivers, with the exception of graphics drivers (and sound drivers if you've got a dedicated sound card).

Even if it is a laptop they can be a bit more finnicky, but for the most part the same as the above usually applies, unless you're missing drivers in Device Manager.

Why anyone would use an auto updater is beyond me. If you've got half a brain cell you'll spend longer checking for authenticity and trust issues than you would just downloading the drivers yourselves.

Don't worry about keeping the driver up to date either. With the exception of graphics drivers the chances of any noticeable improvement is somewhere between zero and none. Check for graphics card drivers once a month (a little more often for cutting edge cards) and perhaps run a firmware check for an SSD once every six months or so.

I've been there for the past 20 years, endlessly searching for and downloading the absolute latest drivers - but these days, unless you've got a problem or unexpectedly poor performance with a new title, it's rarely worth the bother and you'll waste more time looking.
