Auto high-beams

This. A thousand times this. I sometimes wonder if I have sensitive eyesight or everyone else is partly blind.

Agreed. Ridiculously bright over the last decade or so.

And I take it "auto high beam" was invented by the same pillock who decided DRLs only need to be on at the front.

People here genuinely don't use automatic lights or wipers?

Variable speed automatic wipers are awesome.

I don't use my automatic lights because a) I usually want them on before the car does and b) I fear for the life of my xenon bulbs and ballasts as they flash on and off when going under a bridge or heavily tree-lined section of road or something. Probably worrying about nothing but hey ho.

I use my auto wipers though - they're great. But from most peoples' description of how auto high-beams work, I'd probably disable them too. For an "automatic" function to be useful, it has to work well rather than just "exist".

Auto high beams are rubbish. It's one of those technologies that just cannot work as well as a human. When operating manually you can see the subtle change of light in the distance that shows a car about to come around the corner, but there's no way a sensor will pick that up with other distant town lights and the throw from your own lights etc.

The systems aren't usually that sensitive/quick to react (for that very reason), but as you've said it's nothing worth worrying about anyway.
