I have Photo Stream setup so my photos are automatically backed up to my MacBook, but it doesn't do videos. Short of paying a monthly fee for an increased allowance on iCloud is there any other logical option to do this automatically, rather than manually through Photos?

I don't think so. I use the iCloud option which for 50Gb is only something like 79p/month. Well worth it for the convenience.
