On my new system I used the auto setting in the Maximus hero BIOS to overclock my 4770k.

Is there much of a difference in using the auto setting to overclocking the system manually?

If so what are the downsides?

Auto tends to very much over compensate on voltage.

Best to take notes of the settings on Auto if its working ok, and manually enter them, but with less voltage.

As the others have said, auto over compensates the voltage so use manual. Auto doesn't tweak the cache either.

I found that the Hero really adds too much voltage. I had a play when i installed mine and found that for the cpu level up at 4.4Ghz it applied 1.29v vcore when it only needs 1.264v manually. Less voltage, less temps!! Never has it been so important as it is with Haswell.

My G45 gaming actually does quite a good job with it's auto. If I set my ratio to 45 and everything else to auto on my 4770k it does not go too mad with the voltage and everything is nice and stable with decent temps.

Saying that I still use my manual config as I feel better doing that...

Something really wrong there. There is no way a overclocked Haswell will run that cool unless that's idle temps. What are load temps?

Would stray away from auto oc due to the excess voltage as others have said. Always manual so you can control each individual setting and moreover safely oc your system within safe voltage ranges.

As for the temps what was your system doing when you took them? I take it you weren't in p95 LFFT?
