Auto-Reboots, no warning, please help!

Hi guys, I'm having this real b*stard of a problem at the moment where, very intermittently, usually under some kind of load, my pc just reboots without warning. By this I mean the screens just all of a sudden go black and then the pc starts up as if someone just pressed the reset button.

I've noticed this happen so far, intermittently, (sometimes within 5 minutes sometimes after an hour or two, some times not at all) with the following operations:
  • Battlefield 3 (game)
  • Saving videos in Windows Movie Maker
  • Space Marine (game)
  • Photoshop CS5

There's been a couple of other games as well I think but otherwise a lot of stuff seems to never trigger it no matter how much I use/play. Also it's never happened whilst idle.

I've run 2 passes of mem test which I know isn't very exhaustive but that alone took about 10 hours on my 16gb ram and came up with nothing. Fans are all turning and temps are consistently good. In an effort to rule out software to some degree I've reinstalled windows and re-downloaded all drivers anew (all more up to date than previously). Since the reinstall, I've played battlefield for a good few hours and it's been fine, however whilst saving a video out in movie maker, it happened again :(

I've attached a screenshot of the error report in event viewer as well as a capture of my HWMonitor with my voltages etc. I'm not sure what is needed to work out whats wrong but hopefully this will help!

Currently I'm thinking that it could be my voltages as that -12v looks kinda crazy but since my understanding of these things is limited, I want to rule out software before spending money on new hardware...

Any help you guys can provide will be much appreciated.

Cheers!

no bsod nothing? just random off

seemslike psu to me,as in not enough juice at load

what psu are you using btw?

I'm using a zalman ZM1000-hp so base wattage is more than enough, I guess it's just a question of stability in those voltages... and yea no BSOD, literally as if someone just pressed the restart button, boots up fine and gives me the 'would you like to load windows normally' message, press enter and in I am.

yeah it all depends how much its supplying over each of the rails

if you did get another psu id go for a 600-750w xfx

another test would be to try with just 8gb of memory installed just to rule out memory issue with 16gb

yea that xfx 650 looks pretty good, not going to waste money on stupidly large power supplies any more since I never actually use the power! I will have a go with a single stick in a bit, like you say, just to rule it out. In the mean time, what are your impressions on those voltages? I've tried to do some research into it all but the -12v looks so ridiculously far out of the '0.5% margin' or w/e it is, that I'm thinking that it's supposed to be like that...

im not sure if it's specific to amd systems but ive just looked on mine and it doesn't show the -12v

not sure if its meant to show how much the +12v has dropped by? seeing as the +12v hasn't moved at all from 12.288v

idk if you could borrow a psu to try first?

yea that does seem pretty odd... I'll have to ask around to find a PSU and try it out if no-one else here can shed some light on it. I'll restart now and whip out a ram stick, see what happens. Cheers wazza, i'll update with results from the ram removal in a bit!

What I would do here is take all parts out of the case and reinsert them. May seem drastic, but if it's a bad connection somewhere, then this is the sure fire way of eliminating it.

Try one stick of ram at a time
Try a new power supply

Yea it's weird that it's just that mysterious -12v rail that seems to be going absolutely mental, don't know if its meant to be some kind of variable voltage that this software is picking up or what. Hey RJC, unfortunately no, I don't have a multimeter which is a pain as that could help things. That aside, I have removed one of my 8gb ram sticks and just running on the one and so far, after about 30 mins of battlefield and saving out 3 videos in high quality with movie maker (about 15 minutes worth of processing) I'm yet to experience a crash...

i'll leave it for another day or so like this and see what happens - I'll report back when I know more, cheers!

OK, since my last post I've experienced no crashes what so ever on either stick, running each stick on their own for about 2 weeks. During that time I played the offending games and ran crap-tones of movie maker projects with no issues. My thinking now is that either the second ddr slot itself is the problem, or my board isn't drawing/psu isn't supplying enough juice to power all 16gb at once. Any suggestions? Can I just run a single module in the ddr 2 slot to test it? (that might be an obvious question but my knowledge is sporadic and I've never actually tried it!)
