Autocorrect Options in MS Word

I inserted a bunch of abbreviations in Autocorrect Options to make my typing faster (such as 'VS' for 'Vǫlsunga saga' etc.), but Word helpfully seems to delete all of them from the Autocorrect list periodically (as in at least once per day, it happened yesterday and it happened this morning). Does anyone know where those options are saved and why it reverts back to defaults without my telling it to? I didn't even close the document I was working on: 'VS' stopped working and opening Autocorrect Options showed me it was no longer on the list, and this was mid-session!

Are they saved in normal.dot? I'm using a custom folder for my documents (X:\Docs rather than the default folder XP set up for my documents), and the latest version of normal.dot seems to be in there (so for once it's listening to me and saving where I tell it to). It wouldn't have anything to do with it periodically resetting, would it?

Ah-ha! Interesting... Ignore the above post: it isn't resetting them at all: what happened is that, for some reason, it keeps a different Autocorrect list for footnotes than for the main document, which is why, browsing through my Autocorrect Options, I thought my custom changes had been deleted. How can I make both lists apply universally? Anyone know?
