ok i'm a complete noob, i've never encoded dvds before (they don't even have copy protection before anybody asks, they're free dvds) but a quick google and i'm using this to encode a dvd to xvid to save some disk space. now i haven't a clue if this is any good or not? is it or should i be looking at an alternative? the dvd i have is only 1 hour long and it's just taken 1 hour (slow ass pc letting me down here) to do 1 pass and it's just started a 2nd. how many passes do these things take. is there something quicker/better?

trouble is i have 20 odd disks. this is going to be painful at 2 hours+ a time......
:)

You can set them up to do like 4-5 in a batch, more if you like. The second pass normally takes a bit longer on my machine, it also depends on how much it has to compress the dvd as to how long it takes.

I'd just copy 4/5 dvd's on the HD, each in different directories, then batch process them over night.

i seem to have a better solution. i'm using dvd shrink to get the 3gb originals down to 1.5gb (the lowest it will go). i have enough space to save the 20 odd disks like this and it only takes 15-20 minutes per disk. quality isn't important so this looks to be my way forward. :)

you can set autogk to do it by quality instead of filesize, will only be one pass then :)

use dvd decrypter in ifo mode to copy the titles across, then use autogk to add a load of them to the job list (test one first at say 75% quality)

Yeah ifo mode is cool. I keep AutoGK at 100% when encoding, probably adds some time but meh! I need my sleep. :o

Thanks go to bledd for getting me set on DVD Decrypter, IFO mode and AutoGK. Anything else you fancy teaching me? :D :p

sorry i don't have any of these new-fangled messaging thingies...... :o

i tried autogk at 70% and let it get about half way through but i could see the projected file size was going to be well over 2gb so i aborted it. trying again now with 25% and it looks like the finished file will be 600mb - the clip is only 52minutes on each dvd so i'm guessing it will turn out fine. i'll just have to wait and see. :)
