I am considering buying a damaged-repaired car and have started reading up on the pro's and cons.

it seems the only way to be sure/safe (besides not buying one) and also remove the VCAR (Vehicle Condition Alert Register Category) from HPI checks is to have the vehicle inspected by Autolign who are specialists in confirming cat c and d cars have been professionally repaired and not bodged, and are safe to drive etc.

my question is, how does this work exactly? the car is on a dealers forecourt and obviously I am not going to part with any money until it has passed this Thatcham/HPI inspection and had the catagory changed to 'condition inspected', I think I'm right in saying safety aside for a second, it's not even possible to tax a car with a VCAR flag on it.

anyone gone through the process and bagged a bargain ??

If its something special and worth the hassle then maybe, but personally I wouldn't bother with one, usually more hassle than there worth.

Mate has a lovely looking Cat C e36 M3 got it for sub £3k two years back but he's constantly having suspension alignment issues with it principally because it wasn't repaired properly and no amount of tracking / alignment is going to straighten out a bent car.

It looks the part but feels nervous and twitchy in a straight line and downright lairy on bends, the polar opposite of my old non bent e36 328i
