Automate installation of updates

By default, you see a message from Software Update when new updates are available. After downloading you need to choose Reboot to install the updates and reboot. Is there any way to let it automatically download and also install the updates without user intervention?

Installing updates requires user authentication with a password, so in effect they can't be installed in the background.
