Here are two questions for a computer expert.........

1. Is it possible to get a PC to automatically power itself up after a power cut (ie without having to press the power on button)?

2. If I have a PC that has gone into 'sleep' mode is there a way of waking it up remotely (ie connecting to it over the web)?

If anybody knows how to do either of these things I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know how to do it.

Most PCs have this option in the BIOS, usually named something like 'resume after power failure' or similar.

Google 'wake on lan' or 'magic packet'. More than likely will not work across the internet though, only on a LAN.

I once looked into boiling a kettle through a telephone call (bear with me on this one)

An ATX power supply can be switched on via a modem. Therefore all you need do, is plug a standard dial up modem into a nearby telephone socket, and when you want to switch your pc on, dial that number.
