Automatic SQL Backup

I want to backup my wordpress DB everyday and send it to my email.
I've tried some wordpress plugins and they did not work for me.

After some digging around, I think it is down to the wordpress cron. What other solutions do I have?

What SQL server is it, MSSQL, MySQL?

MYSQL Version : 5.0.77-community

If you're using MySQL and have shell access, use automysqlbackup. I've been using it for a while now and it works very well and will even email you with the status of the backup if you wish.

Otherwise you could just use PHP. Although take a look around, lots of examples exist

I can get shell access but I have to request it.

I'll try using PHP and report back later tonight.

Also lots of wordpress plugins exist which may be slightly easier.

Could someone who is using Wordpress 2.7.1 test this plugin - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-db-backup/

Lots of people are having problems with the Scheduled Backup feature because of the updated CRON in 2.7.1.

2.8 is supposed to fix this but wondering if anyone is using this plugin successfully on 2.7.1.

Ok, the wordpress cron seems to be fine for others so I've now concluded my host may be blocking fsockopen() for security reasons.

I've requested shell access and will try to change this.
