Hi

Been using Norton Internet Security for a while which has a built in firewall and AV utility however since it now wants a increased fee for their services and annual subscription, i have turned to other alternatives.

Been reading badass's guide which recommends a good number of different firewalls and AV products. My main issue is i am currently using Zonealarm Security suite which basically has both a built in firewall and AV/Malware protection however i noticed that despite it doing a good job it has affect a noticeable performance within windows and general apps.

When you click on a any app it often hangs for a good bit (even just solitaire) for a good 15 secs before it actually opens. Once it caches it within memory it sweet as a nut. You can close and open as often as you like without experiencing any lag or delay. This applies to most apps as well including CS or steam. Likewise once it has open it is fine. From what i can see from task manager. The overall suite uses a incredible amount of resources with all it independent scanners and exe's to just run.

I think what is causing this initial delay is the actual AV real time scan function. Any app or exe that is opened for the 1st time gets a quick scan and subsequent apps gets the treatment. It not a huge problem i suppose but was wondering what do most other people use for a good system firewall and AV checker where it does a good job but doesn't require such hefty amount of resources nor affects any noticeable performance dips.

Ideally any free apps would be great :D

Since i got a new GFX card going to go for a fresh install anyway (not done one for a while now) so thinking this time round not to use ZSS but go for something like

AV - AVG virus protection (it free and does it a good job)

Firewall - Here where i am not sure. Could go back to Zonealarm for just the free firewall instead of the full blown suite. So any suggestions here would be much appreciated.

Cheers

I just changed from the Bitdefender 10 suite to seperate AV and firewall products as bitdefender has some quirky performance issues when using network shares with computers on your on LAN. ANd the AV side of it would scan at random when browsing causing a huge slowdown.

I bought 2 licenses for Kerio firewall for $19.95 US dollars and 2 Kaspersky 7 AV for about £15. These seperate products perform much better than the previous and did not cost much at all.

Kerio used to do a free personal firewall which was pretty good. Check the site ot see if it is still available.

thanks for the reply. I think your right. Having seperate apps is probably going to be better overall.

Going to stick with AVG for AV and read further in another thread. COMODO is a good firewall but not sure if it good performance wise as well.

Cheers for your reply.
