I'm looking at upgrading and replacing my Creative T40 II 2.0 with a better 2.0 as my desktop speakers.

My old man has recently upgraded from his his old Yamaha receiver and passed onto me, so was wondering if it would worth me getting some decent passive speakers to go with it and use as desktop 2.0 instead of getting another pair of active speakers such as the R1800T III...

Ideally would like to keep the cost of the speakers at around £100...

well when it was new Tech Radar had this to say about it...
"One of the best value sub-£1,000 receivers on the market"

So I'd say adding a decent pair of speakers is definitely the way to go

Wharfedale Diamond 9.1 or Tannoy Mercury V1, both are very high quality speakers for £100
Just wondering...is the more expensive Q ACOUSTICS2010i GR at around £130 and Q ACOUSTICS2020I GR/WHARFEDALEDIAMOND 121 at around £170 worth spending the extra and stretching to?

Also just to clarify, as I mentioned I'm using this as my desktop speakers, so the speakers would more or less be within my arm's reach from where I sit, so I need speakers that can products/deliver details even at low to moderate volume level.

Dali Zensor, only suggesting as you were contemplating £170. They are a little more... But very well regarded in that price bracket.

Looks like the Yamaha RX-V2600 aside, I can get a spare pairs of KEF Coda 7 from my dad. Obviously these are not modern speakers, but he told me they are very good, and comparable to the much more expensive speakers back in the days.

Anyone know anything about the KEF Coda 7?

They are late 90s IIRC. Check to see if they are magnetically shielded if using next to your PC.

Give them a try, see what your ears think. Speaker technology doesn't change much.

They are far superior to any of the cheapo £100 speakers you'll be able to find new these days. The 2600 is a good receiver, use the KEF's if you can't afford to buy something better.

My PC is on the floor by my workstation/desk, so it should be ok?

Will give it a try when I get the chance.

Looks like I should start looking around for nice xmas present for my dad this year :p

only downside is you'll really have to hike up the speaker height off the desk because the tweeter is below the mid range/woofer.

I wouldn't go mad on stands till your sure you want them, get some polipods and see how you get on with them first, they may do you.

i have news for you

the R1800T III are expected to be RRP of 89.99

and should land early november.

I will list for pre-order once the PO and ETA is confirmed by the supplier. which should be tomorrow.

So they are going to be the same price as the 1600T III?

Not that I'm complaining :p

Was struggling to remember the cheaper version of polipods I found a while back - acoustifeet, sold by purite north on hifi wigwam. Will probably still set you back £10 ish but I'd suggest giving them a go before you spend 10 times + on desk stand thingamabobs.
