I'm looking to buy a lounge Music/Movie setup early next year and i had my heart set on the Marantz SR series for the receiver as they get good reviews and support all that i want.

Apart from 4K.
I know 4K is a while away yet, but i was looking for a purchase that will last 5-10 years. I want my next TV purchase to be a 4K TV, or if not ready yet, a cheap TV until then.

The SR *008 series support 4K pass-through and 4K upscaling. All to give buyers an idea they're ready for 4K in the future, which they won't be surely, with the receiver still using HDMI 1.4?

I'm in a pickle. How far off are we thinking for 4K? If it's 5 years when i can buy a HDMI 2.0 4K TV for £1200-£1500, i'm going to be annoyed. I'm really just working this all out in my head, what to get and what's coming etc. Can i please ask your opinions on this, i'd greatly appreciate them.

TIA

From what I've read so far, the existing HDMI 1.4 standard can deliver 4K video but it's limited to 30 frames per second (or 30Hz). This is ok for most movies, but TV broadcasters are looking for higher frame rates which will have to wait for HDMI 2.0

I'd get the AVR that you want now - it'll be good for a few years and if switching becomes an issue then it's likely that you'll be able to buy inexpensive HDMI switching units. Remember also that high end AV does have a good resell/trade-in value as long as you don't sit on it too long. I got a great deal on my old AVR to upgrade to an Arcam AVR400.

probably worth looking into automatic calibration of the speakers that come with the AVR.

most 1-1.2k machines have 4k pass through (HMDI 1.4), so you should be ok in most cases. either that, or get soemthing cheaper and upgrade later when HDMI 2 becomes common :D.

Here's the setup i'm thinking of at the moment:

AV Receiver: Marantz SR6008/SR5008
Fronts: Mission MX5
Centre: Mission MXC1/MXC2
Rears: Mission MX1/MX2
Sub: BK XLS200-DF MK2

Any other speaker combos to try to match with the Marantz, i know Marantz and Mission MX, it's nice but open to suggestions running on a budget of £2k-ish

Can a mod please change the title of this thread to "New AV setup for Rossi~" Thanks :)

Highly recommend Yamaha amps - The two that I've had have performed admirably.

I wouldn't worry about 4K to be honest - I don't think its going to happen in all honesty other than for niche users.

The jump from normal TV to HD was mainly driven by the urge for people to save on space from CRT based telly's- not many people gave a crap about HD, most can't tell the difference between normal and HD (lol, wtf, I know!!) but they do about something big taking up their living room/bedroom.

4K - meh - just like 1080p really needs 40"+ to see the difference, you'll need about 60"+ to see the difference between 4k and 1080p

just my take (waiting to be shot down in flames as this is a techy forum after all lol!)

:)

For speakers it's worth a listen to the Monitor Audio RX and GX ranges, B&W and KEF. If you like the Mission "sound" it may take a while to adjust to other makes though.

I have the BK XLS200 and it's awesome, but if you have a big living room for this kit consider the XLS400

To note: I got an amazing deal on the Monitor Auidio GX50 and GXC150 about 2 months ago - possibly I "think" as a new range is coming out (all the other speakers in the range were available also). If you ring around it might still be available - or trawl the AV Forums Advertisers/Bargains threads for current offers on other kit.

Don't assume something is out of your price range, though I'll admit good discounts on B&W is pretty rare unless you're forking a sizeable chunk of cash.

Cheers guys :)

After sleeping on it i think buying what i want now is the best idea, until 4K matures.

In regards to MA GX series, way out of my price range tbh. I'm looking at around £2K inc Receiver
