Ive connected up my olf Yamaha AV reviever to a couple of speakers and headphones for use on my PC and work laptop

Im connecting in via HDMI for audio this is the most convinient as ive got a USB KVM and Ive plugged in a USB to HDMI adapter for simplicity of switching,

The annoying part is that du to not having anything plugged into the HDMI out on the reciever (I run my screen direct via DP) its not enabling any sound output. If I plug the reviever into a monitor, its works fine.

Does a hdmi connection not work if it doesnt detect an output, if not does such a thing as a dummy hdmi connector exist that will allow me to fake a monitor, and if so would that work?

Im trying to run as few cables as possible and dont want to run another hdmi lead up to the monitor for no real reason

Interesting. Maybe try one of those HDMI headless plug which mimics a monitor. ”hdmi dummy plug” they are called. I used a couple to get some motherboard to boot running headless.

By the sound of things what you need is actually an AMP rather than an AV receiver. Albeit the AV receiver should provide the same functions.

As a work around do you not have a spare monitor just to leave the thing plugged in?

A HDMI amp would be ideal, but I had this old reciever laying around rather than buying something extra.
What I cant work out is if its the reciever not processing, or Windows just not outputting as its not detecting anything on the other end
