AV software - should I be paying?

I've just renewed my NOD32 license so I'd say no, it's not a waste of money. If you're happy with NOD32 then peace of mind can be priceless. Bear in mind NOD32 also scans for spyware, malware etc.

Free Av's are OK to a point but like most things you do tend to get what you pay for. The one exception to the rule if you really want a free AV, in my opinion, is Avira Antivir if you can put up with the advert in the free version.

Thanks dude.

Why are you using not using Avira Antivir instead of NOD32? :)

Erm...good question!

I use NOD because it also protects against Malware and Spyware as well as viruses in one neat easy to use package. Saves having to install seperate anti spyware programs etc.

And it's never given me any problems either (although I have put Avira Antivir on my Dad's laptop and my Brother in Laws PC and they've had no issues so far)

What are peoples opinions of AVG8? I've always used it and it seems fine

Wasn't a fan, it seemed to crash on me a lot (although tbf I think that's when it was still in beta). I've switched to Avast! Home free edition and haven't felt the need to switch back to AVG8.

Not keen either to be honest. I put AVG7 on my Dad's laptop and that was fine. As soon as I updated it to version 8 the problems started...specifically causing his laptop to start up very slowly.

Avira Antivir is now on there and all is well again, so I'd avoid AVG8.

i currently pay for subscription to Kaspersky and highly recommend it , NOD 32 is also excellent. i have used most free AV programs some are good some are bad at protecting your pc hense this is why some are free. From my personal experience the AV i have payed for have protected my pc far better than the free AV, im guessing that the data bases are better equipped thats why you are paying a subscription

If I were to pay for an AV it would almost certainly be NOD32 or Kapersky - both brilliant packages for their money.

I was a fan of AVG up until Version 8, updates have become un-reliable and I noticed a slow down on booting. I have now switched to Avast! Home Edition and have not looked back.

I also have a machine running Avira AntiVir, that is a very good anti-virus, very pleased.

Most free solutions do pretty well these days,... That said AV software isnt really needed if you use the internet carefully and go along with UAC in vista (its not all that bad) :) (oh and have a firewall)

I think that the detection rates are all pretty similar between engines; but what I've always liked about the Eset stuff is that the program itself is better than the rest and doesn't interfere or cause any slowdown. I also only paid £75 for a 4pc, 3 year license for Eset Smart Security (student pricing) which was very nice.

Been using Avast for a while, would recommend it

Even got rid of Norton 07 on my mums PC for it, makes a real difference!
