Avant window navigator in Mint 8?

I have recently installed Mint 8 and everything works fine apart from getting avant window manager to work.

I have gone into software manager, selected avant window manager and chosen to install it, but it doesn't show up on the "start" menu under accessories? Are there further steps to get it working?! Confused

EDIT: LOL I just noticed it is under the "package" manager and not the "software manager" so it's all up and running now. Could anyone explain what the main differences are between the software and package manager? Linux noob here...

I'm not 100% but I assume that package manager will be direct access to ALL the packages in the repository, whereas the software manager has access to common and popular pieces of software in "easy view". Arch user here so it's just a guess
