does anyone here use Avast?. for years iv used avg and now i have vista i switched av progs because i read avast is pretty good.

but heres the question. does avasts on-access scanner decrease performance when running games? as its suppose to scan stuff in real time so there must be some kind of performance hit while its doing this?

Technically any real time scanner will impact performance. Real time scanners aren't really necessary if you're a competent computer user, and weekly scan is more than enough in my eyes. Although to be fair, i've still got RT scanning on my laptop here but i've just neutered it, i've got than enough CPU cycles to go round so i suppose its a case of well why not?

hmm i suppose theres no harm in me disableing the on-access scanning while playing games and just turning it back on when im surfing the net etc?

I have to say avast is one of the best scanners i have used.

So much so that i went and bought the 3 year family license for my windows home server, thats give me a home server license and 10 client licenses for the pro version.

Its brilliant. Not being funny but with todays hardware you dont notice any hit in performance when using a virus scanner in the background. If you were to get back to single core p4 and so on then i would say yeah it would be a pain.

I cannot recommend Avast be it the free home or the paid for pro version enough. Before avast i used to be a big Panda AV user.

how does that compare with Avast?

I assume you meant Avira AntiVir?

I have never used Avast. This is a process shot for all that is running by Antivir - that also includes the antispyware available through the premium version:
