Will be interesting to see just how much of his experiences in deep ocean submersibles James Cameron brings across into the movie.

Whilst I enjoyed the technical 3D aspects of the first film, the actual storyline didn't make me want to see any sequels.

So, for me at least, if 3D is virtually "dead" again in cinemas (and will likely be for another 3-4 decades again), what chance does the 3D in Avatar 2/3/4 etc stand when Cameron has already said most cinemas don't have the "right" Laser 3D projection gear or autostereoscopic screens etc for what he wants Avatar 2 to be shown on and cinema's are certainly not likely to invest in expensive 3D gear just for his film?

I think Cameron left it 5+ years too late to make these and he's missed the chance to re-excite people into wanting a 3D experience when most people just don't care about the "gimmick" any more which is a shame because I think Cameron is probably the only one in Hollywood who is capable of making "the best" 3D movie ever.

Saw avatar 1 at the cinema and it was one of the few films where 3d actually enhanced the experience.
I think this will be the downfall of the sequel(s) when Avatar was released 3D was going through a hot spell now it seems to have once again been consigned to the bin so I fear the next movie will too often be watched in a 2D setting where without the wow factor of the immersive 3D the week plot etc will be revealed. The first movie was a technical marvel but as a story and film I thought it was very average.

Cameron has left it a little late to release these imo.

A little? They're heading into Duke Nukem Forever territory with their delays. Avatar 2 was initially meant to be out in 2014.

Visually some parts of it looked nice, the actual Avatars though just looked like lanky generic Blue Cat people with vague similarities of the actors faces pasted on.

I predict this will replicate the Dork Fate scenario exactly. lots of pomp and franticly excited promos about Cameron being back at a franchise, and a whole lot of "meh" when it comes to the film itself.

It looks very pretty, but like most modern films, it's all way too CGI heavy. Just looks like a flashy computer game to me. It just doesn't look real, because it isn't.

I miss the days of practical effects and models :(

Yeah, good luck trying to make an Avatar movie look convincing with practical effects

Like most Cameron movies from the Abyss onwards, his main motivation for doing them in the first place is pushing technical/visual boundaries, which this and the first have done.
To say it's too CGI heavy is missing the point :)
