any idea what the average amount of data downloaded, for say 1 hour, of playing CSS/TF2 is?

Basically I'm looking at the O2 PAYG mobile broadband which gives you 3GB of allowance for £15/month

Is this mobile broadband as in using 3G/your mobile? If so, you'll probably only be playing about 5 minutes of CSS/TF2 before you quit with disgust at your 500+ ping.

Otherwise, it depends on things like your rate settings and is generally quite easy to work out from those. Given the fact that even 256kbit upload ADSL/Cable is more than ample (and I seem to remember 128k being okay a few years back too) for gaming, it won't exactly burn through your bandwidth allowance, though it'll certainly make a fair dent in it if you play a lot.

If you do end up using one of these, look up the registry entries that programmes like faster ping tweak and then tweak them for your mobile broadband modem; If I get a good 3g signal on my vodafone USB kit average ping is around 200-300 (basic ping could be as low as about 120 sometimes) now tweaked, and general net usage is a lot...smoother. Untweaked IMO they can be terrible.

3GB download limit would be fine for playing a online game.. but i have heard the pings suck with mobile broadband.

thx for the info, i have a bit of a nomadic lifestyle hence can't get tied down to a contract for normal broadband. may as well give up the notion of mobile online gaming...

Depends. CSS isn't really gonna be fun, but other online games that aren't as quickdraw dependant are fine. Stuff like WoW or strategy games are very playable with pings of 300ms.
