i want to get rid of/ put in the loft all my dvd + cases as they taking up a lot of room, im looking at building a htpc for the living room and having the dvds stored on their or building a server and streaming the films to the htpc, trying to work out how much space i would need is a pain as i cant seem to find the average file size for a x264 converted dvd.

does anyone know the average file size per x264 film, thats just the movie with none of the extras added in?

thanks

Judging from the DVDs I've encoded, full length films usually end up at around 1.2-1.5 GiB encoded with H.264 and AAC.

EDIT: The pedant in me must comment. H.264 is a standard for video compression. x264 is a FOSS library for encoding thing using the H.264 standard. It's like saying that an mp3 is a LAME file. I don't know how how people came to call it x264 rather than H.264. :p

they can be any size you choose.. it's down to personal preference.

A fairly bright and simple movie with stereo audio will be fine with a 700meg filesize.

A dark complicated movie with 5.1 will look good with a filesize of 1.4GB

Just encode one and see ;)

I recommend StaxRip for ripping to x264/AAC/MKV easily :)

would 264 be the best encode-age for my collection then ? will be displayed on a 32 + 37" lcd screen, aslong as its close to dvd quality i could opt for a different compression :)
