What would you class as today's average pc? And what would you consider a top of the line pc today? I just want to know the basic spec; processor speed, amount of RAM and hard drive size. I reckon the average would be about a 1.6GHz with 512MB Ram and a 80GB HDD. Any thoughts? I realise its a random post but i want to write something about it in a cruddy essay! Ta.

hmmmm

Having been to my local collage to assess and upgrade there PC's, I would say that there average spec's are Pentium P75, 64Mb Ram, 10GB Hard drive with Win98

But for average Joe, I'd say from the people that come to me for upgrades, the average spec's are Athlon 1700+, 256Mb Ram, 40Gb Hard drives, 64Mb graphics cards (mainly shared memory onboard) with Win98 or ME.

Why not check the results of the STEAM survey or something like that, then you have what is arguably empirical evidence. Asking on a forum like this is likely to skew the figures somewhat as most people here will have a PC far in advance of the 'average' for the rest of society.

Your guess doesn't sound too bad, it might even be slightly over but then I suppose it depends on whether you want the mid-point exactly of all PCs in use or an average based on PCs bought in the past 3-4 years or ....?

Thanks guys, after thinking about people who i know that dont play games or aree into computer's i reckon my first guess was a little too high. Prob more like 1.4 GHz with 256MB RAM. But then again I want the average of pc's on sale today really so who knows!

Just had a look at the STEAM survey, some of it makes interesting reading. Think thats a bit biased towards gaming rigs tbh.

By implication I suppose it would have to be for people who are into gaming although it is surprising how many people are using old machines with several generations old graphics cards etc. I don't think they have re-set the figures since they started it a couple of years ago so it won't be strictly correct but it may still be worth it as a basic idea. :)
