..i cant remember....
Question, Has anybody actually had a conviction from a set of average speed camera's??

I see them all the time on the M1 / M6 and also small section of A1 now....have seen various people not realize and speed past etc

Normally you here somebody moaning "Caught flashed the other day...." but never heard anyone say that they have been done by one of these???

Is it just a visual deterant? Have you been caught by one? :(

Hmmm some of the replies to original question are interesting.

I have heard similar stories of the "Lane Changing" Tactic, i suppose the main the thing though is nobody would actually try it so i suppose the unknown is proving them to be effective.

They are big and yellow and have the Camera warning sign near them, lets just hope that they do not become too common and make EVERY motorway journey that you take a compulsory 50mph average!!

I appreciate they are there not just for our safety but also for the safety of the workers (Especially on the M1) and yes the CC does help, i nice sit back and relax time :)

Interesting that only one person so far that has posted actually knows somebody that has been caught by them

They aim at the front, right? So they can't see my bike's plate?

Interesting point there, Motorbikes!! They are front facing camera's surely this does give you immunity :D

Like most thoughts on this "AVERAGE SPEED CAMERA" conversation is that nobody ACTUALLY knows lol and is most definitely not worth trying out

I just wish somebody who worked for the camera company was on this forum lol

Since they can identify a registration plate almost instantly, what I am really looking forward to is the day that SPECS is used to identify and prosecute the drivers of cars without a current valid MOT or insurance :)

HERE HERE! None Insured drivers are my biggest bug bare!!!

I do agree that any accident reduction is a GOOD THING, i just have this slight hunch that the bigger picture will see these Average cameras on a larger scale, like in France

Judgement of speed should be something that comes naturally to most motorists - I can guage my rough speed from looking and listening to my car.

You could use the same argument for the standard motorway limit, so its not exactly a defence or even a reason that they are any more unsafe than not having them. Bearing in mind most average cameras are used for roadworks, where you have people working in the road.

They're clearly an effective deterrant, most people slow down for them which is what they are designed to do - contrary to popular belief

Agree with you, they are very successful from what i have seen. Having said that i have come across a few people that treat them like normal speed cameras and when they come across the first one they slam on their breaks as they think they will get flashed immediately :p and do not understand the AVERAGE part lol

Whats the point in risking it though, thats what I dont understand with these things? for the sake of 5mph, you're probably talking about 30 seconds of your day - is that really worth the fine and points?

With the UK fast paced lifestyle i think the percemption is that you are loosing part of your life by going through average speed area :p
