hi all, currently using AVG 7.5 but it keeps popping up with update to 8.
is it worth going to 8? does it use more and hog more.
i dont use firewall either just windows own on vista. is it worth going for firewall or keep going liek i do and watch where i go.

I upgraded a while back, seems fine to be. You'll want to turn off the Link Scanner thing because it's annoying (and disable the AVG extension in Firefox if you use that browser), but aside from that it's been no more noticeable than previous versions of AVG.

hey adbp1,

I made the jump to AVG 8 from 7.5 not long ago, and I'm pleased with it, it's a lot less intrusive and the annoying multiple panes are thankfully gone. Updates are faster and better handled than 7.5, I think, too.
The program idles as seen below:

I don't know what 7.5 idles at, but I'd be interested to know.

Ive just put this on after using 7.5, can't make it out, its got automatically heal/remove infections ticked in the scan settings, then when i scan, it comes up with a crap load of stuff, all in Internet explorer (which i don't use, i use FF3) HKLM/SOFTWARE/INTERNET EXPLORER/ACTIVEX COMPATABILITY, comes up with stuff like, found Adware Vundo, Found Trojan Bomka etc... but when the scans finished it doesn't remove them, i have to do it manually, and once i restart my PC, do a scan, they are all back again.

Its funny, as 7.5 never found any of these, it always came back clean, and id just ran a scan of it before i removed it and put version 8 on.

ok start full scan and within few mins of scanning it found this which worries me.
is this normal??

I upgraded, but didn't like it one bit. Every time that it updated it wanted to restart my machine, damn annoying! Using avast right now, but think I will pay and get nod 32.

Im finding it odd to, everytime i restart my PC it finds the same ones over and over again, all 196 of em, internet optimizer/adware vundo/ trojan bomka etc... etc... yet at the bottom i noticed it just says no threats found, so why on earth do they keep appearing, and why on earth is this the only program thats finding all this crap, its looking like a load of false positives to me, and probably why it doesn't automatically remove/heal them, like its set to.well

I think FF3 doesn't work with the linkscanner anyway - it's disabled it on the PC I accidentally installed it on.

Apart from that, works well as ever, definitely worth upgrading in my opinion.

Used AVG for maybe 1 to 2 years and upgraded to AVG 8 last month. I immediately hated the linkscanner and general oversimplified interface and came on here looking for alternatives. I've now switched to Avira Antivir

I used to use AntiVir year or so ago now, only stopped using it as the servers kept going down so couldn't update it, may try it again as i used to like that, and its supposed to be good to.

please tell me how to do these, thanks

AVG8 seems to use a lot more resources (mostly on Resident Shield), don't try to run it on a sub-1.2Ghz system. Even with a P4 3Ghz PC the startup is slowed down by 10 seconds.
