AVG 8 or Avast!

another +1 for Avast FREE. Installed it on all my vista and xp machines at home, and any new builds/repairs for customers/friends.
Used to use AVG, but not since 7.5. Bitdefender is good too, but to get their good stuff you have to pay.

Avast.
I've been on Avast for around 18 months maybe more, Over this time I have stuck it on loads of systems for friends & family etc & have Never had a problem with any of them.
You can use Avast with confidence

I had AVG for a couple a years and only started getting trouble with AVG 8 so ended up installing Norton Int sec as it was on offer and is remarkably faster these days never notice its there infact

I have always used AVG for mine and friends pc's, and it used to be very unintrusive and quite nippy...

....but not as impressed with V8 as it seems a lot slower, and sometimes doesn't update. When I open up an explorer window the icons for exe's take a bit to show and you can see it progressing down the window. Wasn't that bad before. :( Thats with a quad core too.

After seeing this thread last night I decided to give Avast! a go - last time I tried it was on XP64 as it was the only 64bit freeware AV software then.

Put me off a bit when on rebooting and going into windows I got a loud blast of some american voice stating "you're anti virus files have been updated". Kinda freaked me out but I did have my volume up a bit. Disabled sounds now. Will do a scan of my machine ad see what it comes up with.

Historically I have always used AVG, Spybot and Adaware and its been a good combination - hopefully they will optimise AVG a bit in the next release - or is the full version better (to encourage you to buy it?).

I've always avoided Norton AV (or more specifically their "security suite") as well as mcafee av after dealing with a lot of issues with the former on friends pc's, and how poor the later is on works pc. They used to use symantec which was just as bad to be honest.

Pretty much what he said.

+1 (+however many computers I installed it on) for Avast. Best FREE Antivirus out there and good with resource usage too.

I like both, I also feel that avast has slightly better detection rates, nod32 is also worth considering. Didn't try it for long so not sure how good it is, it has had rave reviews though.
