AVG Not Initialising Resident Shield

Crikey. I'd love to know what folks do to get malware on their machines. Seriously, I haven't used a resident shield in 10 years and have never picked up a thing. The only thing program I use is Admuncher which blocks all popups and ads. I have to assume the majority of people infect their machines by clicking on any and all popups that materialise.

Oh, and I run a manual scan now and then with Hitman Pro but it never picks up on anything.

User error 99% of the time...

And then they moan at anti-virus software not protecting them

:) It was fine until MSE came out.

It's swings and roundabouts really. MSE takes up twice the RAM on my machine compared to AVG (sad but true!) and in PC Pro's testing this month with a mixture of known and 0day threats, MSE detected 87% whereas AVG detected 100%.

Do the same test tomorrow with a different sample and the results may well reverse. Hence, as per our previous discussion on this, layered security (preferably with HIPS, an auto-sandbox and default deny) is essential and traditional AVs are becoming more and more obsolete. :)
