For a good while I've run both AVG and AntiVir on a machine of mine.

As of today, AVG (resident shield) has started reporting a virus (Win32/PolyCrypt) in aeheur.dll in the AntiVir directory.

I assume AVG is making a mistake?

It's not recommended to run two AVs together. Maybe that file contains definitions used by AntiVir which AVG thinks is a virus.

Does AVG give you more info on the virus - as said above it's almost certainly a fake positive.
I'd say AVG was jelous.

Must be...

Like I said, I've run the two for a long time togethor with no problems, but I guess AVG doesn't like the look of something in AntiVir now.

I'll get rid of AntiVir...

Thanks...

You can keep both antivirus I think but don't have them both actively scanning.

Well, I heard AntiVir was better than AVG at finding viruses etc. But unfortunately it's doesn't scan email. Hence I had them both.

On looking today, it seems AVG isn't far behind AntiVir (if at all), so I've removed AntiVir, and will just live with AVG :)

AVG in recent times has become notorious for some pretty dangerous false positives! At least one was a core Windows system file...

Well, the only thing it's picked up recently (starting yesterday) was the AntiVir file. So I'm generally happy with it...

AVG Advanced Settings: Resident Shield\Exceptions

Had the same problem as I too run both programs. Got a clue form the Avira Forum and did this - In AVG Advanced Settings \ Exceptions I added the following:

C:\Program Data\Avira\
C:\ProgramData\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\TEMP
C:\ProgramData\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\UPDATE\
C:\Program Files( x86)\Avira\AntiVir Desktop\

Might be more than I need but for now OK!

Thanks! Why do you see the need to run AntiVir as well as AVG?

Avira (which many of the the OC Forum Members rate) is on trial for 12 months. If I like it I will renew. Games for me is a low priority hence much of what I have is of value (book author / geologist) so to speak. Compared to the price of peripherals etc, I don't think its a lot to pay for solid protection. Having tried Auslogics disk defragmenter, I decide to purchase the suite. Other software bought for keeping a tight ship include AMUST registry cleaner and for DVD's Slysofts Any DVD - the latter two products don't incur update fees for the next versions . . . unlike many other products. Incidently Slysoft Anydvd for subsequent purchasers now expect payment for further major updates I think!
