avast is better in all ways except user interface. But if you can live with it (I never, ever go into it - have no need), then it's a superior product.
i think the only real difference between them is the interface ect. as far as live protecting goes, ive never had any virus problem with avast and since youve been using AVG for 18 months, i guess you havent either.

mmm been running AVG and Avast at same time in last 24 hours, just installed a random freeware software, Avast detected a spyware/trojen which AVG didnt........
made the same switch myself. First i used NAV 2002 then 2003. Then i heard about AVG (which is free) and installed it. It found viruses before NAV so i ran both at once.
Then i heard about avast, it was just as good as AVG but with boot up virus scanning. (ie scanning before getting into windows etc.) Very nice feature and a huge bonus.
But yes i agree the UI of Avast is definately not the most user friendly. But i would recommend it.
