I've been looking at a lot of different monitors in my search for a decent but affordable 20" widescreen. I've been holding out for one with DVI input but there are a lot of similarly priced or cheaper VGA monitors available. Some VGA monitors boast higher contrast ratios & better features than equally priced DVI monitors. So what is best to go for - a budget DVI or a similarly priced VGA with a better spec? How much difference does DVI make?

Damn, you beat me to it! :D

p.s. to answer your question. I''ve just switched from a VGA LCD to a DVI LCD. Everything does appear sharper on DVI, but tbh that might just be the new monitor. I would say go for DVI, but don't be put off with VGA if you've seen a monitor you like the look of. I personally didn't notice much difference for normal use i.e. games, internet, etc.

As well as gaming I use my PC mostly for music apps, Photoshop, Vegas & other apps. I'm thinking that text & graphics would appear noticeably sharper with DVI. Is this the case? I guess for games & movies the sharpness would be less noticeable between VGA & DVI?

Found this article;

According to this there's not much in it these days;

CRTs rarely provide support for digital signals; DVI support is found primarily on LCDs. However, the advantage of digital signals for LCDs is of somewhat less importance now than it was a few years ago. Analog signal processing has improved to the point where major differences in image quality can be difficult to detect. Unless you're a pro photographer, a prepress professional, or someone else who needs superprecise, top-notch image quality, you should be fine using a CRT or an LCD on an analog signal.

So what really makes the difference here? DVI over analogue or better brightness, higher contrast ratios etc.
