Hi guys,

I've got some avi files that I downloaded, but I'm only getting the audio when I play them through WMP. I've tried downloading a codec (x64Components_v172 from Shark007) that seemed to fit the bill but it hasn't changed anything. Once installed and rebooted do I need to do anything else? Can you recommend any other codecs?

Cheers,

Jed.

I've been using:

Vista Codec Package 5.1.5

With no problems, tried loads in the past and it seems as good as the rest to me...

i find k-lite codec a great all rounder

not for vista 64.

use the Vista Codec Package from Shark, and the x64 Components from Shark

no other codec package is put together neatly like this, the rest are dirty in comparison

i used the vista codec pack and found a hanadful of films and some season 2 lost avi files did not have any sound, agree it's a neat little pack, but went pack to k-lite codec after that.

which version?

if you get any files with issues, snip them with virtualdub and report to author

he releases a ton of updates

not sure on the version off hand. it was a few weeks back. Maybe i should give it another blast. i only went back to k-lite codec after that.

same here, the vid and sound were out of sync when i used vista codec pack
i now use k-lite codec and the 64 bit version also and no probs

Hmmm I wouldn't use any kind of codec packages to be honest, most of them installs stuff you don't really need.

All you need is something like ffdshow for AVI and sound and then you need a codec for H264 material because ffdshow does not do that properly, something like Cyberlinks, Power DVD or if you wanna put some money on it Core AVC which is superb!

i find if you download a lot of varied avi format films/tv then you do need a codec pack mainly for old stuff to be honest

64bit needs something like VCP.

I shared your view until Visat x64 media centre came along

think of them like zip or rar files

basically the pc needs the correct 'dictionary' to decipher the compression used.. ie you can't open a rar file with winzip.

things like ffdshow have a good way of tackling many formats, but some are more closed than others

would be cool if ffdshow could do ALL files, from divx, realmedia, quicktime, mkv, mpeg etc
