Hey guys,

I'm looking to burn a couple of AVI files so they can play in a DVD player. Could someone give me a run down of these codecs, and which one I should use/what they are/which one would be best?

VCD
DVD
SVCD
Mpeg 1
RMVB

I have no idea which one I should be using to play back in a standard DVD player, so any help is appreciated.

Cheers.

As far as I am aware vcd and svcd will only play in your player if it will support it. If you do not know then it would be better 2 go from avi 2 mpeg 2. There are lots of conversion utilities that would even do divx, xvid etc :)
Rmvb is sometimes used by some online tv episode channels.

Nice, so mpeg 2 will work fine in most DVD players?

Newbie time; What happens if I put a half dozen seperate MPEG2 files onto a DVD, then stick it in a player? will they all just play sequentially? (I've got a presentation on monday and need to show some videos)

Google for TMPGEnc and you'll find a program to conver to the right format, and the program to create the files to burn on a dvd is called TMPGEnc DVD Author, although I don't think it's free, you may be able to get a trial though. As far as I am aware, just writing the files to a dvd and putting it in a player won't work, unless theres a special model that plays the files (like the ones that plays mp3s, jpegs etc.

It also wouldn't do any harm 2 place a number of mpeg 2s in sequential order on 1 disk (multisession) 2 ascertain whether a menue of sorts enables you 2 play them one after the other. A stand-alone dvd recorder would do this.
