Avoiding spam lists

I work for a relatively small publishing company and we have a lot of issues with emails. Throughout a year we send up to about 1 million emails including newsletters and internal messages. Non of which is spam or unrequested.

We frequently find ourselves on spam lists and end up having to change our IP. We also get blocked by gmail and other popular mail services for what seams like no good reason.

I have googled this a little but cant find a solution on how to avoid this permanently. How do larger companies that send much higher volumes of mail get around this?

I don't imagine there's any sure fire way of doing it that's why they always come with the please add us to your safe senders list line in the email.
