Ok I'm doing some research on Avon Products - the US Cosmetics company and I note that their advertising campaign created the famous phrase "Avon Calling" (from wikipedia "Avon Products" page) - I have no idea where this came from? Was it used when the sales women knocked at your door? Why is it so famous (ive never heard of it)?

Any information anyone has would be most useful!

I found an encyclopedia preview on it but it required me to pay to see the rest of it...the rest of the links I found were all a play on the words "Avon Calling" with people visiting places called Avon and such like!

ding dong (doorbell ringing) 'Avon calling'

Thats what I always remember as a sort of 'catch phrase'
Correct.
Avon was sold door to door and the ladies would ring the bell and say avon calling.

You probably haven't heard of it as it isn't used nearly as widely now as it used to be. Very famous catchphrase though. It was I think really just used as the Avon representative used to call regularly at your door. There is a bit of information in this press pack.
