Avorion was released on Steam early access on the 23rd January following a successful kickstarter campaign last year.

"A procedural co-op space sandbox where players can build their own space ships out of dynamically scalable blocks.
Fight epic space battles, explore, mine, trade, wage wars and build your own empire to save your galaxy from being torn apart by an unknown enemy."

Early access release trailer:

Older kickstarter video here, but some more info from the Dev:

Finally a another older vid with a couple of the devs messing around showing some big space battles:

There's also a demo available on the official site, but it's a pretty old build compared to the Steam release so worth bearing that in mind if you try it - I'm finding it pretty fun so far. :)

Cool idea, shame the ships look so blocky at the moment. I want some sexy curves.

Yeah would be nice, although I think there's still more block types to come so who knows. I don't don't mind the blocky look and some people create some pretty nice looking ships. :)

Managed to get a (very) basic ship running last night and help attack some pirates in my starting system, then had to make a quick retreat when half my ship fell off - you don't last long with no armour, shields or integrity fields and pea-shooters for turrets, still fun though. :)

Just a little bump as I'm surprised there hasn't been more discussion on this gem, it's already pretty great tbh.

Very positive rating on steam and already got my money's worth out of it with no signs of getting bored.

I've not tried the multiplayer yet as there are a couple of stability issues the dev is sorting out at the moment but that has great potential - really reminds me of Eve in a way but without being overly complicated - great music too.

At first glance it looks like a clone of Space Engineers?

Never played space engineers myself but it seems to remind people of a few other games too, the X series, Eve etc.

You don't get out of your ships, it's focused on the experience of building and flying them and exploring a galaxy. You also manage crew, find and install ship upgrades and you can even build a fleet and create stations etc., but those are still in need of some more work.

The general goal is to head to the center of the galaxy and things get harder and more dangerous as you go - you generally have to keep upgrading and making your ship bigger and better but you're free to go where you wish really.

Steam workshop support is coming apparently to make sharing ship designs easier (xml files) - helps if you're not the creative type. It's also got mod support right now (Lua).

There's a demo on the official site (linked in OP) people can try but it has limited content as you'd expect, it's fairly old now though (patch wise), but may be worth a try for those that don't want to commit any cash to it yet.

Spending most of my time having fun building ships so far, and over 20 hours in - money well spent. :)
