Hi all,

After taking advice in and much deliberation on ultrawides, I've settled on two models for both personal use and use with a work laptop:

  • Alienware AW3420DW (I've already ordered this, should be here tomorrow so that I could get it while it was on offer and thought the G9 wouldn't work properly, given my work laptop limitations)
  • Samsung Odyssey G9 (I discounted this one at first as I was told that my work laptop would only support a max of 4096x2304 but have since found out I can use the full monitor in PbP mode)
I'm fortunate enough to get a discount through work for both at varying rates. The G9 works out to be about £240.00 more than the Alienware.

What are people's thoughts on either? I prefer IPS over VA but haven't been able to see either monitor in person, given the circumstances.

Can’t offer much (if anything) by way of comparison but I recently just picked up the Alienware and love it.
I came from a VA Acer Z35p and the only downside is the IPS glow from the Dell, however it has many more upsides - motion blur and colour fidelity chief amongst them.
It’s probably the best monitor I’ve owned (certainly the most expensive I’ve owned) although I was lucky to get mine for £650.

Ah that's good to hear then! I think if I'm honest, I'm just worrying that I won't buy what is perceivably (at least to me) the best monitor I can get at the moment. I've had my current one since 2014 and while I don't think I'll keep this one as long, it could be nice if I could without getting the itch to upgrade again :p

How have you found the size of it? Is it wide enough from a productivity perspective or do you use multiple monitors? This is why I was considering the G9 but at 81cm wide, I'd like to think the Alienware would be more than enough.

For me it’s the absolute sweet spot for all round monitor usage. I’ll not lie if I had twice the money to spend on a monitor I’d have loved to get the Alienware 38 inch model but as I said that’s just crazy money.
I’ve always been a one monitor person, I prefer the cleaner look on the desk. That being said with the whole working from home thing I brought a 24 inch Dell from the office that I use in portrait orientation alongside my Alienware - it comes in handy as I work with a lot of documents.
Overall I’m not sure I would want a bigger monitor as I’d end up moving my neck too much so see the edges. The 34 inch provides space for two perfectly sized windows on one screen.

For me the only decision here is the aspect ratio. 21:9 and 32:9 monitors aren't comparable so it's a question of picking which size you want first.

I have an AW3412DW which I love and, whilst I may well upgrade in future, it would always be to a 21:9 aspect of some size. The G9 simply doesn't interest me at all as it's too wide for me.
